HYPOGLYCEMIA IN TEACUP PUPPIES
1) The most important rule, is to always have food and water available for your puppy at all times. Due to their small size, teacups must replenish energy more frequently than larger size puppies. The only way to do that is by supplying plenty of nourishment in the form of food. You must remember that puppies only eat very small amounts of food at a time but they use large amounts of energy. I do not recommend that you change your puppies food for the first two weeks. At that time if you choose to change please do it gradually so you don’t upset their little system. Mix the old food with the new food start about 25% new and 75% old, for several days if there is no upset increase to 50-50 and so on.
2)Teacup puppies require extra supervision, warmth, supplemental hand feeding and must be watched closely for hypoglycemia. HYPOGLYCEMIA or low blood sugar is a common problem in tiny puppies. It is something that can be prevented by making sure the puppy has plenty of food and water and is eating. The puppy must be watched very close when you take him/her home. I recommend that you give your puppy 1cc of Nurti-Stat AM & PM to help with the transition. If your puppy is not eating here are a few suggestions you can try get a small jar of chicken or beef baby food and mix about 1TBL with ten kernels of their hard food. If that doesn’t work I have mixed cottage cheese in the same manner. You must make them eat!!! If that doesn’t work SYRINGE feed him.
If puppy is lethargic and refuses to eat, try to first give him NUTRI-STAT, that sometimes brings his blood sugar up and he will eats on his own at that point.
3) SYMPTOMS OF HYPOGLYCEMIA, acting listless, walking unsteady, shakiness, and in extreme cases, laying on side and unresponsive. This is extreme and you must pry mouth open and rub honey or karo corn syrup on the gums, wrap the puppy and lay him on a heating pad to bring his temperature back up. At this time contact your vet immediately for further instruction.
4) PREVENTING LOW BLOOD SUGER IS THE BEST TREATMENT! Monitor what is being eaten, KEEP PUPPY WARM, they can not maintain correct temperature if they are under 2 pounds. DON’T LET THEM GET OVER STRESSED! Give them lots of love and attention, but give them quiet time as well. They require about 20 hours of sleep a day at this age.
5) IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CALL ME!!! My heart and soul goes into every little puppy that I have. Their health and well being is important to me.
